I didn’t want to follow him. I certainly didn’t want to rely on him. Not for a second have I enjoyed being a damsel in distress, but, seeing as I have no hidden archery talents or any pressing desire to get eaten by something that lives on this island, I figured it was probably safest to do as I was told.

That, of course, and I have to admit… I was curious. What’s a casino owner doing with arrows dipped in hydra blood?

Was he completely insane, or was I?

“So,” Margo murmured as they paused, waiting for a group of tiny goblin-looking creatures to stumble down the street, “is this the gun Theseus used to kill Medusa or something?”

“Hm? No,” Alec said, peering around the side of the building. “That’s what the sword is. Theseus didn’t have a gun.”

“I—” Margo stifled a groan. “I was, once again, joking.”

“Not really the time,” Alec informed her, gruffly signaling for her to follow him into the street. “I’m sure you can joke plenty once you’ve gotten off the island tomorrow.”

“Well, it’s either make jokes or worry about dying,” Margo muttered under her breath, slipping after him from the shadows.

“Considering one’s much more useful to me,” Alec said, “you might want to reconsider your choice.”

“What are you so nervous about?” Margo demanded. “Don’t you have some sort of powers? You said you killed the magic here.”

He slid her a look of agitation. “Yes, well, that was something of a borrowed power. The gods put me here in order to keep an eye on their more… recalcitrant offspring, shall we say. Divine procreation can be something of a mixed bag,” he finished, pivoting to aim the arrow at the flicker of motion between two buildings.

“So you really are a glorified babysitter,” Margo realized once the danger had passed, wanting to laugh. “Is that it?”

“I’m a guardian appointed by the gods,” Alec corrected.

“Yes,” Margo agreed, “to watch their children, Alec. Literally, a live-in nanny.”

Alec let out a frustrated scoff, lowering his bow and rounding on her. “You do realize you’re the reason all of this is even happening, don’t you?” he snarled. “Because of you, the gods are going to be furious with me. The best I can hope for is that I can reset the containment spell during the fall equinox, which is in three months—”

“Well, that’s a fairly flawed system, isn’t it?” Margo countered, stiffening. “If all I had to do was use one tiny bit of magic and now the whole island’s gone mad, it seems like your actual problem is a faulty fucking spell—”

“See, this is the problem with modern witches,” Alec muttered, to which Margo replied with a scoff. “None of you are taught any etiquette anymore. There’s no codified understanding of behavior. You just run around casting spells as you please, not bothering to comprehend that on some nights it’s really better if you just stay home.”

The last part was said with a growl, which Margo firmly didn’t appreciate. “You,” she informed him, “are a patronizing asshole.
