I didnât want to follow him. I certainly didnât want to rely on him. Not for a second have I enjoyed being a damsel in distress, but, seeing as I have no hidden archery talents or any pressing desire to get eaten by something that lives on this island, I figured it was probably safest to do as I was told.
That, of course, and I have to admit⦠I was curious. Whatâs a casino owner doing with arrows dipped in hydra blood?
Was he completely insane, or was I?
âSo,â Margo murmured as they paused, waiting for a group of tiny goblin-looking creatures to stumble down the street, âis this the gun Theseus used to kill Medusa or something?â
âHm? No,â Alec said, peering around the side of the building. âThatâs what the sword is. Theseus didnât have a gun.â
âIââ Margo stifled a groan. âI was, once again, joking.â
âNot really the time,â Alec informed her, gruffly signaling for her to follow him into the street. âIâm sure you can joke plenty once youâve gotten off the island tomorrow.â
âWell, itâs either make jokes or worry about dying,â Margo muttered under her breath, slipping after him from the shadows.
âConsidering oneâs much more useful to me,â Alec said, âyou might want to reconsider your choice.â
âWhat are you so nervous about?â Margo demanded. âDonât you have some sort of powers? You said you killed the magic here.â
He slid her a look of agitation. âYes, well, that was something of a borrowed power. The gods put me here in order to keep an eye on their more⦠recalcitrant offspring, shall we say. Divine procreation can be something of a mixed bag,â he finished, pivoting to aim the arrow at the flicker of motion between two buildings.
âSo you really are a glorified babysitter,â Margo realized once the danger had passed, wanting to laugh. âIs that it?â
âIâm a guardian appointed by the gods,â Alec corrected.
âYes,â Margo agreed, âto watch their children, Alec. Literally, a live-in nanny.â
Alec let out a frustrated scoff, lowering his bow and rounding on her. âYou do realize youâre the reason all of this is even happening, donât you?â he snarled. âBecause of you, the gods are going to be furious with me. The best I can hope for is that I can reset the containment spell during the fall equinox, which is in three monthsââ
âWell, thatâs a fairly flawed system, isnât it?â Margo countered, stiffening. âIf all I had to do was use one tiny bit of magic and now the whole islandâs gone mad, it seems like your actual problem is a faulty fucking spellââ
âSee, this is the problem with modern witches,â Alec muttered, to which Margo replied with a scoff. âNone of you are taught any etiquette anymore. Thereâs no codified understanding of behavior. You just run around casting spells as you please, not bothering to comprehend that on some nights itâs really better if you just stay home.â
The last part was said with a growl, which Margo firmly didnât appreciate. âYou,â she informed him, âare a patronizing asshole.
